Trent University has recently received a new sculpture from renowned sculptor Shayne Dark as a part of the University’s ongoing public sculpture initiative. This unique piece titled This Column Ends highlights the contrast between industrial materials and the natural landscape of the Peterborough campus.

The sculpture, located at the entrance to Blackburn Hall, is described as Mr. Dark’s homage to sculptor Constantin Brancusi and his infamous piece entitled Endless Column.

“I am excited to be part of this university project,” said Mr. Dark, “I feel a personal connection to Trent as my family is in the area.” 

This Column Ends is the fourth art installment that has come to the Symons Campus as part of its public sculpture initiative, and is one of four pieces on campus to have been certified by Heritage Canada as designated pieces of Outstanding Significance and National Importance (OSNI).

Mr. Dark is an Ontario-based artist who has had his work exhibited internationally and is best known for his sculptural works. He says that he has always taken a keen interest in every aspect of the process of art production, which he feels draws upon and focuses the physical and perceptual experience of the world. His works are said to often evoke the contrasts between urban settings and the natural world and are meant to stimulate a spiritual or visceral reaction in the viewer. 

As a project of the Trent Art Collection Presidential Advisory Committee, the public sculpture initiative sets out to be an innovative celebration and exploration of Canadian art and identity. As the initiative continues, artists from across Canada will have the opportunity to add their touch to Trent’s beautiful campuses, blending natural and human creations in a display for all to enjoy.
