Trent Alumnus Named Maclean’s Magazine Parliamentarian of the Year

Five-term NDP MP Nathan Cullen ‘94 also named Best Orator in the 2016 and 2017 Awards

Trent alumnus Nathan Cullen ’94 has been named 2018 Parliamentarian of the year by Maclean’s Magazine. A member of Parliament since 2004, Mr. Cullen has been re-elected four times as a representative for the Skeena-Bulkley Valley riding of Northwestern British Columbia. Mr. Cullen is the current Critic for Democratic Reform, a former house leader for the Official Opposition, former finance critic, and former critic for Climate Change and Democratic Reform.

Mr. Cullen was named Best Orator at the Awards in 2016 and again in 2017.  He was recognized as the Most Knowledgeable Parliamentarian in 2014. Award winners are chosen by members of Parliament, who nominate their peers across party lines.

Mr. Cullen graduated from Trent with a B.A. Honours in International Development Studies and Environmental Studies. He is currently one of four alumni serving in the House of Commons, including:

Maryam Monsef ’03 (Biology and Psychology), MP for Peterborough-Kawartha and the minister of Status of Women; Sheila Malcolmson '85 (Environmental Studies/Science), MP for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding of BC; and Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet '74, (Anthropology), MP for the Hochelaga riding of Quebec.
