On the heels of last week’s impressive Maclean’s University Rankings results, Trent University has now also been ranked among the world’s top universities in recently-released international rankings from the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) and the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU).

In the CWUR Trent was ranked among the top 3.4% of universities placing 933 of the 27,000+ degree-granting institutions worldwide, a move up from the 3.6% ranking in the 2016 report. Out of Canada’s 98 universities, only 32 made the list, and among those Trent was the top primarily undergraduate university. CWUR’s top ten universities are all from the U.S. and the U.K. with Harvard University topping the list at number one. 

“Trent’s leadership and exceptional teaching and learning environment continue to be recognized nationally and internationally,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “The jump in position in both these rankings shows that Trent University is making an impact both nationally, and globally as well.”

In addition to the CWUR, Trent also had a strong showing in the recent NTU rankings. As one of only 21 universities in Canada cracking the NTU rankings list, Trent was the only Canadian primarily undergrad university to make the list, ranking within the top 30% of all ranked institutions. The NTU also ranked Trent number 276 out of the top 300 of all universities, in the Environment/Ecology subject ranking, showing once again the longstanding leadership Trent has in research related to the environment.

“Most University ranking systems are highly subjective, relying on surveys about perceived reputation, but Trent scores well in rankings like CWUR and NTU which have quantitative measures like the number of publications faculty make, and how widely those are read and used by others,” explains Dr. Neil Emery, vice-president of Research and Innovation at Trent University.  “Moreover, NTU does not adjust their scoring to institution size, so Trent is on the same global playing field as much larger institutions, based on sheer publication muscle, which is incredible to see.”

The CWUR is the only global university ranking measuring the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research, without relying on surveys and university data submissions. CWUR uses eight indicators to rank the world's top 1,000 universities including: quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, publications, influence, citations, broad impact and patents.

The NTU ranking provides overall ranking, ranking by six field categories, and ranking by 14 selected subjects, all aimed at evaluating academic performance by research universities. The ranking system evaluates the performance of scientific papers, and indicators are designed to compare both the quality and quantity of scientific papers from each university.
