Ten years after hosting the wildly successful world women’s field lacrosse championship, Trent and Peterborough will host the same event in 2019 for an even larger crowd.

Over 500 athletes and coaches, 50 officials, and 20 women’s lacrosse teams from around the world will be welcomed to the Peterborough community, and Trent’s Symons Campus for the Under-19 World Women’s Lacrosse Championship in August 2019. The exciting announcement was made at a special event at City Hall on July 31.

In 2007, the Peterborough committee hosted 11 international teams at Trent University, drawing record crowds. The 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s Lacrosse World Championship is expected to draw over 20 teams from around the world, the largest number of teams ever.

“Trent was the proud host of the 2007 Women’s Under-19 World Field Lacrosse Championships and we’re pleased to welcome this international competition back in 2019,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “We look forward to profiling Trent’s impressive Athletics Centre and facilities, and to have the opportunity to showcase Peterborough and the Kawarthas to athletes from around the world.”

“We look forward to not only hosting elite athletes, their coaches, and officials at Trent University as they stay on campus for the 10-day tournament, but also numerous community members and volunteers to our state-of-the-art sports facilities,” added Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics at Trent University.

Trent is no stranger to championship-calibre lacrosse. Both the Men’s and Women’s Excalibur lacrosse teams had an incredible season in 2016/17 with the women’s team taking home gold and the OUA championship after an undefeated season. Just four years after the women’s lacrosse program began at Trent University, the team won against five-time defending champion, Western Mustangs in the OUA finals. The men’s team also had an impressive season, taking home silver in the Baggataway Cup.

Trent’s state-of-the-art athletics facilities at Justin Chiu Stadium, will play host for the opening ceremonies for the games, set for August 1, 2019, as well as the championship final on August 10, 2019
