Making a mark on the world comes easy when you’ve got a work ethic and level of dedication like Trent University alumna, Sarah Scott ’12. The recent Philosophy graduate is making history as the first full-time female firefighter for Quinte West.

“I am absolutely honoured to be the first female hired full time in Quinte West. It's so important to note that as much as hiring the first female is a fantastic step for our department, when it comes down to it, we are all firefighters,” Ms. Scott says. “Although I am so excited to be making history, this achievement, for me, is representative of what a person can achieve if they set their mind to it.”

Ms. Scott worked as a volunteer firefighter throughout her time at Trent University, often spending reading weeks and holiday breaks on call. As she prepares to begin her role with the fire department, she says that the support she received from her peers, Trent faculty, and the Trent environment played a significant role in leading her to where she is today.

“My time at Trent shaped me into a very disciplined individual, both academically and athletically,” explains Ms. Scott. “My program was very challenging and gave me the critical thinking skills that help me every day when I'm on the job. Being able to work out complex problems and understand different points of view has become an invaluable skill for me. Also, Trent’s environment promotes health and wellness, which was conducive to bettering myself as an athlete and made me a better firefighter. My time at Trent and the relationships I built during those four years were a part of what built me into the firefighter I am today.”
