Trent Builds Relationships with Tech Companies in K-W
Networking opportunities opens doors for Trent student innovators
The tech scene in Kitchener-Waterloo is rapidly growing, and Trent University students are building relationships with tech companies in the region, establishing connections, internships, and career opportunities.
Earlier this semester, the Trent Computer Science Society (TCSS) took a bus of over 30 Trent students to the Start-Up Open House event held by Communitech, a hub in Waterloo for tech companies of all sizes. The students toured the hub and other companies in the area to speak with developers, business owners, and recruiters to learn about the abundance of job opportunities.
“Networking with potential employers is one of the most important steps to getting a job,” remarked fourth-year Computing and Information Systems student, Matthew Barnes. “Without a solid network, it's impossible to keep up with the industry and the latest opportunities in your field.”
Although Computer Science majors dominated the event, students of all majors were welcome at this networking event.
“The tech industry is in demand for talent from all disciplines,” stressed Dexter Fichuk, president of the TCSS and a campus ambassador for Communitech. Mr. Fichuk aims to bring more networking opportunities to Trent students this year in hopes of preparing them for jobs in the tech industry.
Following the initial networking event at Communitech for students, members of the TCSS planned a follow-up trip and brought Computing & Information Systems faculty, the dean of Arts & Science, and Trent’s coordinator of employer and recruiter relations to tour some of the same businesses. The group was able to sit down with employers at each company, and ask questions about what they look for in potential employees.
