Trent highlighted in Council of Ontario Universities Going Greener report

Organic produce grown on campus, water bottle-free convocation ceremonies, and recent construction projects built to leadership in energy and environmental design standards – these are just a few of the many green initiatives that Trent University has in place on its campus.

Committed to environmental stewardship since its inception in 1964, it’s no surprise that Trent was highlighted in the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) Going Greener report released last week. The report, now in its sixth year, illustrates how universities in Ontario are becoming more sustainable in their operations and policies surrounding food sustainability, conservation efforts, and the creation of partnerships that are building a greener community.

“Trent University is committed to reducing our environmental impact by supporting a multitude of initiatives that drive us toward that objective,” said Christine Salo, manager of the Trent Sustainability Office. “As highlighted in this year’s COU Going Greener Report, Trent University, in conjunction with Trent Food Services, has exceeded our targets for local food sourcing in the first year of the contract and plan to continue to expand local procurement.  One exciting development is that Trent Food Services has started to purchase food grown on campus, by students, at the Trent Experimental Farm.  Further exciting initiatives will soon be announced that include active measures to reduce energy and water consumption on campus.”

Read the fill COU report by visiting their website, or take a look at the many green initiatives at Trent by visiting the Trent Sustainability Office web page.
