Trent’s Forensic Science Camp Introduces High School Students to the Real CSI
High school students learn and apply forensic science skills at Trent University’s state-of-the-art facilities
The annual Forensic Science Camp at Trent University has kicked off another successful summer program with two week-long sessions running in July and August. High school students attending this year’s camp are immersing themselves in a unique and exciting learning environment to gain hands-on experience in DNA technology and forensic science.
Run through one of Canada’s leading Forensic Science programs, Trent’s Forensic Science Camp allows high school students to gain a sense of what forensics is all about and to explore the practices that real expert scientists use in the field. By being able to learn from key experts, students attending the camp are also able to conduct bloodstain pattern analysis as well as investigate their very own crime scene.
Students are also treated to guest lectures by some of the field’s leading experts in the areas of bioterrorism, entomology, anthropology, and wildlife DNA studies. Participants learn from the experts and conduct their own crime scene investigations on cases involving homicides, assaults, robberies, and more.
Recent Trent Forensics program alumna, Vanessa Nicholls, is the coordinator of the camp this year and is extremely pleased with the opportunity the University is providing to high school students who might be interested in pursuing a career in Forensics. “It’s really neat to see a younger generation get excited about something I chose to do as my career and something I get excited about too,” Ms. Nicholls said.
The camp takes place on Trent’s Symons Campus where students have access to the University’s state-of-the-art DNA Building. Camp attendees are also able to experience real university life during their stay as they live in the residences, eat in the cafeterias, and have lessons in lecture halls.
Sessions of the Forensics Science Camp run July 5 to 10 and August 16 to 21. For more information on Trent Summer Camps, please visit the Conferences website.
