Dr. James Parker and Team to Appear on CBC Television’s “Test the Nation” January 24

Trent University Team Again Provides IQ Trent University’s psychology professor James D. A. Parker has again provided a research team to develop the IQ test for use in this month’s two-hour special event on CBC Television.

On Sunday, January 24, 2010, Test the Nation will conduct its second real-time interactive IQ test on CBC Television. The IQ test was created by a team of intelligence-testing experts led by Professor Parker and Professor Donald Saklofske of the University of Calgary. Prof. Parker also led the team who developed the test for the inaugural Test the Nation event in March 2007.

“Trent University has a strong background in test development, which is why the CBC again picked us,” explained Prof. Parker, who is also Trent University’s vice president: Research, International, and Strategic Enrolment Management. “It was an interesting project to do, and provided an excellent learning opportunity to work on with my team of graduate psychology students and research collaborators.”

Viewers can take the test in their own homes by playing along online or with pen and paper, while six teams exercise their competitive brainpower live in our Toronto studio. The show will be hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos and Carole MacNeil. A segment for the show, describing how the IQ test was created, was filmed on Trent campus in November with the Trent-based team of Professor Parker, Laura Wood, Holly Kristensen, and Katia Keefer.

Recognized as one of Canada’s top experts in emotional intelligence, Prof. Parker is holder of a Canada Research Chair in Emotional and Health. A faculty member at Trent University for 15 years, Prof. Parker has published approximately 140 articles and chapters, mostly in the areas of emotion, academic achievement, and health. He is co-author of the 1997 book Disorders of affect regulation, co-editor of the Handbook of Emotional Intelligence, published in 2000, and co-editor of the recently published (summer 2009) book Assessing Emotional Intelligence.
