2010 Camp Sessions Run from July 5 to August 28 at Trent University

Trent Summer Sports Camp 2010 in Full Sw The 2010 session of the popular Trent Summer Sports Camp (TSSC) is currently underway and campers and staff have Trent’s Symons Campus buzzing with activity.

With the new state-of-the-art Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre currently under construction and slated to open in September, the TSSC has taken the opportunity to build on and explore more outdoor activities for the 2010 sessions.

Capitalizing on Trent’s unparalleled access to breathtaking natural setting right on the University’s doorstep, the TSSC is using the construction and renovation of the indoor facilities as an opportunity to introduce dynamic new activities, including voyageur canoeing. Thanks to the University’s partnership with the Canadian Canoe Museum, campers have the opportunity to paddle a spectacular 32-foot voyageur canoe along the Otonabee River. In addition, this year’s camp counselors have also been trained by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) and are able to give campers canoeing certifications.

Newly appointed TSSC director, Melanie Sedge, is very excited about the continued success of the camp. “The camp is still the high quality experience that it has always been for these past 16 years,” she said. “This year we have drawn out aspects from the foundations of the camp to enhance the overall experience while still maintaining the attributes that make this such a fantastic camp. Next year we are excited to build on all our new programming coupled with the amazing new Trent Community Sport and Recreation Centre.”

During two-week-long sessions, the Trent Summer Sports Camp (TSSC) leads campers into a supportive atmosphere monitored by specially trained staff and student leaders. Canoeing, dancing, and swimming are just a small selection of the many activities that campers are immersed in on a daily basis during their time at the camp. The camp combines daily activities with dynamic concepts to continually keep campers engaged and interested throughout their eight-hour days.

To help families that require financial assistance to send their kids to camp that might not normally have the opportunity, the TSSC has set up a Share Camp Fund that allows donations to be made. So far this year, community members as well as camp staff have donated enough money to allow 20 additional kids to participate in the camp.

The TSSC is run by the Athletics & Recreation Department at Trent University and has a long reputation of being an outstanding summer program for children. The camp is a thriving piece of community programming that benefits not only the campers, but also the entire Peterborough region as one of the only summer camps offered in the North end of the city.
