Lady Eaton College Celebrates its 40th Anniversary In Style
Students and alumni, college principals, dons, past and present, and members of the Peterborough community packed the Lady Eaton College (LEC) Dining Hall on Saturday, January 24 for a ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the college.
The gathering of so many who, in the words of Professor Arndt Kruger, LEC Principal, “have contributed to creating the life and spirit of the College,” was testament to the central role LEC has played in their lives and learning. Distinguished guests included Professor Thomas Symons, Vanier Emeritus Professor and founding president of Trent University, who honoured “the remarkable lady”, Lady Flora Eaton, after whom the college is named, and Alastair Grant, member of Ron Thom’s architectural firm and design architect of LEC. The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling by John David Eaton, great-grandson of Lady Flora Eaton, of a Grant of Arms, hand carved for the college by John Ottewill. Roderick Cumming, former president of the LEC cabinet in 1989, who led the quest for a coat of arms in the 1980s, explained its history to the audience. Current students gave an energetic cheer and the celebration ended with refreshments which, fittingly, included cakes baked from some of Lady Eaton’s original recipes.
