Raising Awareness, Offering Support: Trent Durham supports Women’s Abuse Awareness Month event
Trent University Durham hosts Women’s Committee of Durham Region for annual Women’s Abuse Awareness event
In honour of Women’s Abuse Awareness Month this November, and to help shed a light on this important issue, the Women’s Committee of Durham Region held a networking and speakers event on the Trent University Durham campus on November 18. Open to students, staff, faculty and the community, the goal of the event is help raise awareness of violence against women, with the evenings focus strictly on sexual abuse.
“Events like this allow students to connect with members of the community and find out about career opportunities in these areas that they may not be aware of,” noted Nicole Kichko, fourth year Psychology major at Trent University Durham.
Four speakers presented on various topics, from the impact of violence in the home, to opportunities to raise awareness to girls in schools, as well as changing the cultural language used so prevalently in our society.
With the introduction of the Bachelor of Social Work program, Child and Youth Studies and various initiatives by the Health and Wellness Team, Trent hosts events like this on campus to allow students the opportunity to interact and engage with community organizations and their members within the field.
One of the speakers and Girls Inc. Durham representatives, Emma Conner, a Trent University alumna, said: “I love that Trent is part of bringing positive change to the community. I love these opportunity where I am able to represent Trent as an alumna in the Durham community.”
