Marvels of Madagascar: An Anthropologist’s Guide to Conservation in Madagascar
Madagascar is arguably the most singular and diverse country in the world. From its unique biodiversity to its amazing cultures it’s like an entire world in an island. Take a journey to the land of lemurs.
During this special lecture Travis Steffens describes what makes this island so important and how he uses his anthropological training to work with local communities to improve their lives and to conserve biodiversity. Travis Steffens has dedicated his life to community development efforts, environmental education, ecotourism, and international awareness in Madagascar. His current research focuses on habitat loss and threat of extinction posed to lemurs, a primate group with 100 different species found only in Madagascar. He is the founder of Planet Madagascar, a conservation, education, and development program that informs local people of the dangers lemurs face, promotes the protection of these primates, and encourages sustainable living. Travis brings travellers to remote wilds in Africa, Central America, and the Canadian Rockies. He is an International Fellow of the Explorers Club, holds a B.Sc. in Primatology and an M.A. in Anthropology. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Toronto.
