Trent University is saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Professor Emeritus Christopher Greene on Sunday, June 1, 2008.

Professor Christopher Greene started at Trent University on July 1, 1966 as an Assistant Professor of History. Professor Greene was appointed Vice-Master of Champlain College in 1970. Prof. Greene was Senior Tutor in CC until 1987 at which time he moved over to Traill College until 1999. Prof. Greene retired from Trent on July 1, 1997. He was the secretary of the Trent University Association of Retired Persons for the past ten years.

Prof. Greene came to Trent University to teach European History, developing the courses which demonstrated in particular his love for France, Paris, 19th Century novels, architecture and the history of ideas. Whether amongst his family, friends or colleagues, Prof. Greene provoked lively debate and repartee. He continually challenged all those around him with ideas, provoking prolonged thoughtfulness on many subjects.

Upon his arrival at Trent University, the Greenes became quickly involved in Trent life. The couple served as dons, living in residence with the students prior to becoming a senior tutor. Beyond the classroom, Prof. Greene was equally committed to the study and discussion of history, the development of ideas and the growth of students. In addition to his academic pursuits, Professor Greene had a passion for gardening and architecture.

In 1976, Prof. Greene along with Martha Ann Kidd and others founded the Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, locally known as PACAC. This marked Peterborough one of the first to create a committee that would work with City Planners to catalogue and protect local buildings of historical significance. Many buildings protected by the City Plan are indebted to the forethought of this committee.

In 1989 at the Honorary Fellows' Luncheon, The Christopher Greene Senior Tutor's Award was established at Champlain College.
