Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario Recognizes Trent University for Intramural Excellence

Department of Athletics and Recreation W For the seventh consecutive year, Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation has been awarded the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario’s Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award.

“Trent University Athletics is once again delighted to be honoured by CIRA for our work in planning and operating sport and fitness activities for students,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent. “A pro-active approach to health and wellness is a critical piece in working to ensure a healthy, fit society while reducing future health costs. Students, who become involved in fitness, are proven to become engaged in their communities and to be more successful academically and socially. It's a win-win for all involved. Hats off to our Trent staff and to Trent students for another fabulous year.”

Trent was one of only five post-secondary institutions to receive this year’s award. CIRA Ontario presents the Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award annually to the top programs at Ontario schools. This year, 74 elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities are being honoured with the award.

Trent University is being recognized for offering a variety of activities that promote CIRA Ontario’s motto of “fun active participation for all.” The intramural program is also being recognized for promoting student leadership and improving the quality of education through physical activity.

At Trent, over 2,800 students participated in intramural activities during the 2008/09 academic year. Activities ranged from student-initiated 3-pitch, beach volleyball and Frisbee golf, to football and volleyball and the more unique inner tube water polo and inner tube ultimate Frisbee.
