Trent Glacier Expert Sets Record Straight on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Error
Dr. Graham Cogley Reveals Error in IPCC Claim that Himalayas could be Glacier-Free by 2035
Trent Geography professor and glacier expert Dr. Graham Cogley is gaining national media attention for challenging and ultimately debunking an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that the Himalayas could be glacier-free by 2035.
Dr. Cogley has reported five glaring errors, including the publication of the wrong date, that appear in one paragraph of an IPCC report described as “the world's most authoritative report on global warming.” His research into the claims led to an apology by the Nobel Prize-winning panel of climate scientists who wrote it.
The date mistake was a typo. The year 2350 was erroneously printed as 2035. According to Dr. Cogley, however, even that date is in question. Other mistakes include a false claim that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than other glaciers, mathematical errors and problems with attribution.
A letter written by Dr. Cogley, citing the errors in the report, appeared in Science magazine. After the magazine was published online recently, media picked up on the story and Dr. Cogley has been making headlines across Canada and the world ever since.
