Oshawa Continues to Attract More Students
Thornton Road Campus open house brought future students with their families
On Friday, March 18, more than 60 future students along with their families experienced Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus first-hand at 55 Thornton Road South. Approximately 130 guests overall enjoyed mingling with faculty and students during a variety of mini-lectures, academic and student service fairs, and tours of the state-of-the-art facility.
"It was a wonderful day," said Dr. Rita Bode, associate dean for Trent University Oshawa. "We know that events such as the open house are important for students in their decision-making process. I am really pleased with the level of interest from the students and their parents. The faculty, students and staff involved have really shown them the best of Trent."
Third-year history student Kelly Vanleyden joined Professor Bode in officially welcoming the students and their parents to Trent. Ms. Vanleyden is a member of the Trent University Oshawa Student Association and is on the Student Clubs Committee. "This is a phenomenal school that has provided me with leadership opportunities, a great group of friends, and a strong education," said Ms. Vanleyden.
Ms. Vanleyden said there are many things to experience during the Open House and one of the most important is the sense of community. "No matter who you are or where you plan to go in life, our school truly has a place for you. Getting a degree at Trent University Oshawa has given me the opportunity to shape my own future, and walk my own path."
High school student Fadil Yusuf is looking forward to studying psychology at Trent University Oshawa this Fall. "I chose Trent for psychology because I hope to go on to psychiatry," said Mr. Yusuf. "I came today to get feedback on my program. I like Trent because of the class sizes and the fact that I will get to meet new people while staying close to home."
Dr. Helen Haines from Anthropology is one of the many faculty members who met with students one-on-one during the academic fair. "I love these events," said Professor Haines. "They are a great way to connect with future students and to let them know about academic department events that might be of interest to them." Prof. Haines is launching a new field course in historic archaeology in Oshawa that will provide students with local opportunities for digging and lab experience.
Future students also enjoyed tours of the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex where as Trent students they will enjoy a free membership.
