The Office of Student Affairs works with the Academic Advisor, student government leaders in the Trent-in-Oshawa Students’ Association (TOSA) and other campus groups, such as Oshawa’s Peer Mentors to promote student life programming on campus and to reach out to and engage with the Durham community. In addition to automatic membership Oshawa’s Recreational Centres, the DRT bus pas and free parking on campus, Oshawa students have access to Durham College’s Health Centre and are welcome to apply for Residence accommodation at the Conlin and Simcoe Road campuses of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Community Links: Student Affairs Oshawa Drawing upon the resources of Student Services at the Symons campus in Peterborough, the Student Affairs Oshawa provides administrative oversight and coordination to Student Services on the Oshawa campus. The Oshawa Manager of Student Affairs, Paul McCann, also provides confidential personal counselling to students. Trent University Oshawa’s dedicated Academic Skills Instructor is on campus two days a week between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to provide individual and small group instruction in
Appointments can be made in Room 101 and drop-ins are welcome when the Academic Skills Instructor is free. Oshawa students are invited to take on-line modules on essay writing, time management and math skills and to make on-line, real time, one-on-one consultations with academic skills instructors at the Academic Skills Centre in Peterborough. Oshawa students can submit a draft of their writing (e.g., an essay or report) at any stage of the process and an instructor will answer your questions and offer comments. The goal is a 72 hour turnaround (excluding weekends). Athletics and Recreation Programs All Trent University Oshawa students pay a compulsory fee which provides them with a City of Oshawa Level 2 Fitness membership, providing them access to Oshawa’s three recreational centres
Each facility includes cardio and strength training equipment and a 25 metre or 25 yard swimming pool. The Oshawa Civic Centre has one of the largest indoor tracks in the GTA and will boast a state of the art outdoor track in the Spring of 2011. For an additional monthly fee Trent Oshawa students can add a Racquet Sports membership affording them access to the Civic’s indoor tennis and squash courts. In addition, each centre offers a variety of recreational athletics programs, ranging from yoga, to weight training, to a variety of fitness classes. A subsidized fitness ad on package allows Oshawa students to register for these programs at half price. For an additional monthly fee, Trent Oshawa students can add a Racquet Sports membership providing access to the Oshawa Civic’s indoor tennis and squash courts. Trent Oshawa will have an intramural athletic program which includes soccer, flag football, ball hockey, and other sports for 2012-13. Professional career counselling assistance is available every second Tuesday on campus and via Skype to Peterborough every Friday. Appointments can be booked in the Student Services Office in Room 101, Thornton Road Campus. Durham Regional Transit Bus Pass All full-time Trent Oshawa students pay a compulsory fee which allows them to ride on any Durham Region Transit (DRT) bus or any GO Transit bus operating within the Region of Durham Region during the academic year (September 1, 2011 to May 31, 2011). Full-time Trent Oshawa students are issued with a student identity card with a special sticker which identifies them as DRT bus pass holders. Bus stops are located on all routes across the Durham Region, when getting on the bus you must show your valid student ID card which will have the UPASS sticker. If you live outside of Durham Region you must purchase bus fare to the closest Durham Region destination and then use your valid student identity card (full-time students only) to cover the remainder of your trip. Transit LinksThe Trent Oshawa Disability Services Officer is responsible for providing support and advocacy for students with disabilities through the provision of appropriate and individualized services empowering students with physical, sensory, and learning disabilities. Services include transcription for the visually impaired, assistance with obtaining note takers for hearing impaired students, exam invigilation services and direct liaison with faculty members. Students who are applying to Trent University Oshawa are encouraged to contact the Trent Oshawa Disabilities Services Officer, Kristina Murray (kristinamurray@trentu.ca) until May 1, 2011 and after August 15, 2011 so that appropriate action may be taken in advance of their arrival to address their needs. In some cases a formal diagnosis and assessment of their condition may be necessary and is best accomplished before the beginning of term. Between May 1st and August 15 students applying to or accepted by Trent should contact the Disability Services Office in Peterborough. Disability Services Office All Trent University Oshawa students pay a compulsory fee which will provides them with full access to Durham College's Campus Health Centre (2000 Simcoe Street North). The Health Centre offers a diverse range of services including appointments with medical practitioners, a nutritionist, and chiropractic and massage therapists. Housing, Residence Life and Oshawa Life While the majority of our Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus students commute, a growing number of students are choosing to live near campus or ask for residence accommodation. Landlords wishing to rent rooms to students are invited to submit their listings to the Trent Off -Campus Housing Office (http://www.trentu.ca/housing/offcampus/overview.php) and students may check listing by accessing the same web-site. Students searching for housing may also wish to check local web-sites such as Studentopolis at http://oshawa.studentopolis.ca/housing/. For those wishing to live in residence there are housing options at both Durham College and The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) campus at Conlin and Simcoe streets for Trent Oshawa students. Shared and private bedroom suites are offered -- either with kitchenettes or meal plans -- in modern, safe buildings with lots of amenities — think free Cable TV and Internet. Peer Mentoring Peer Mentoring is students helping students transition into academic and social life at Trent University Oshawa. It is a resource that can help you get the most out of your Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus education. The goal of this volunteer-based program is to provide support for all undergraduate students in Oshawa. Peer Mentoring fosters a safe, friendly and caring learning environment which promotes student success. Peer Mentors are accomplished upper-year students who serve as role models and represent an important source of information and guidance. They not only help students develop strategies for academic success but they also help them make the transition to university life a pleasant experience. Understanding the unique atmosphere of the Oshawa campus, Peer Mentors help fellow students find the resources they need in order to have a positive university experience. Sexual Assault, Sexual Abuse Durham Rape Crisis Centre In addition to the personal counselling services offered at Trent Oshawa, Trent students may also take advantage on campus of the specialized counselling services provided by the Durham Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC). The DRCC is committed to taking an active role in the Durham community to end all forms of violence against women and children. As a Rape Crisis Centre, the DRCC offers support to recent as well as historical or childhood survivors of sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. Trent-in Oshawa Students’ Association (TOSA) and Students’ Health Benefit Plans The Trent in Oshawa Student Association (TOSA) (http://www.trentosa.com/) represents all full time and part time students of Trent University Oshawa. Constructed early 2010 to address the needs of a newly-expanded and growing Oshawa campus, the new Student Association provides a variety of services and events which reflect the interest and needs of Trent Oshawa students. TOSA also supports and sponsors student clubs and continually works to grow and expand the scope of its advocacy, activities, and programs. (Copy provided by Nicole MacDonald.) ACL Students’ Health Benefits Plan All full and part-time Trent Oshawa students are levied a fee of $187.05 (taxes included) which provides them with a comprehensive health benefit plan including limited provisions for prescriptions drugs, dental and vision care. Details of the plan administered by ACL Canada can be found on the ACL Canada website. Students can choose to opt-out of the plan or portions of the plan for a full or partial re-imbursement (providing they have comparable coverage). The opt-out date is September 30, 2011. For January 2012-start students the opt-out date is January 30, 2012. Students may opt-out online or by visiting the TOSA office during business hours. Students can take advantage of a comparable opt-in option for family members. Students may opt-in one family member for $187.05 (taxes included), or $379.83 (taxes included) for additional members. The process for opt-in will be the same process for opt-out! You may opt-in family members until September 30, 2011 and may do so online at or in the TOSA office. Student Leadership and Community Outreach Impact is an exciting leadership program that prepares students to assume a wide variety of leadership roles within the Trent University Oshawa community and the surrounding Durham Region community. Students who complete co-curricular experience requirements will gain the knowledge and skills to assist them in becoming productive, compassionate, and effective leaders. By attending a minimum of 5 workshops/seminars or the annual retreat weekend with Impact Peterborough students and completing 25 hours of community service, Trent Oshawa students receive a certificate attesting to their accomplishment. The certificate becomes part of their co-curricular record in which all volunteer and service learning experience at Trent are recorded. The co-curricular record is an adjunct to academic transcripts and provides a valuable tool to demonstrate your volunteer community experience and the practical and social skills you have developed at Trent Oshawa to potential employers.
