Honorary Board Member David Moore and Family Donate $200,000 in Support of Trent's Athletics Campaign
New cardio loft in Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre to bear Moore Family name in honour of gift
During a special dedication ceremony held at the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre at Trent University earlier today, the cardio loft in the state-of-the-art new facility was named in honour of honorary Board member David Moore and his wife, Joan, in recognition of their generous $200,000 gift to the University’s Sport, Recreation & Wellness for All Campaign.
The Moore Family Cardio Loft is part of a 12,000 square foot fitness centre located at the heart of the new Athletics Centre at Trent. The loft features sweeping views of the Otonabee River and overlooks the spacious new weight room, indoor climbing wall and Carol Love Rowing/Paddling Centre.
“The cardio loft offers opportunities for students and the Peterborough community to integrate and work out in a wonderful facility,” said Mr. Moore, adding, “I have wonderful memories of Trent, the campus, alumnae, academics and staff from my 18 or so years on the Board and am delighted to be in a position to contribute back to this community.”
Mr. Moore is past commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission and retired vice-president and director from McLeod, Young, Weir (now Scotia McLeod) in Toronto. He joined the Board of Governors at Trent in 1982 and led the University to one of the most significant campaign successes in its history as chair of the “For Tomorrow Campaign” in 1989. The $25 million campaign – tied to Trent’s 25th anniversary – raised $14 million from fundraising alone, a remarkable amount for a small university in its day. In 1993 Trent honoured Mr. Moore with an honorary doctor of laws degree. He and Joan married in May 1956. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
“David and his family have always been incredible supporters of Trent and this most recent gift demonstrates how they see living a healthy and active lifestyle as so important for all,” said Dianne Lister, vice president of External Relations & Advancement at Trent. “The entire Trent and Peterborough community joins me in thanking the Moore family for this generous gift and for investing in the future of fitness and recreation in our community.”
