Victoria De Schiffart

Trent-in-Ghana Participant 2014-2015

The Trent in Ghana program was the best decision of my entire university career.  I took more from the program than I ever thought imaginable. I left the program with such a greater understanding of everything we had been learning in the classroom and a deeper understanding of my degree and what it can offer me and my future.

The learning environment was so much richer than that of my two previous years of my degree.  I largely credit that to the 12-week placement that we participated in. I took more out of my 12-week placement than I had in any classroom.  My placement challenged me both academically and personally, offering me so much opportunity to learn and grow.  My placement supervisor, Auntie Esi, treated me as a valuable member of her organization and offered me a voice in the events and activities that went on.  She valued what I had to say and gave me responsibility, and it was because of this that I took so much from my placement.

In addition, while I was in the Trent in Ghana program to learn academically, I also encountered personal growth.  I learned so much about myself and the importance of laughing off the little things.

Lastly, a large part of my year and learning came from living in a different culture.  The Ghanaians are a very welcoming group of people who are very interested in getting to know you.  I made some amazing friends and met so many people who I learned so much from.  My host family where intent on me learning as much about Ghana as I possibly could and immersing me into their family of six kids.  They would take me on outings and if there was something that I wanted to do they would take me there.

The Trent in Ghana Program is the highlight of my academic career and I cannot imagine completing my degree without having done this program.
