Can international students apply?
Yes. International students are welcome. You must meet the master’s level English language proficiency requirements or take our language training. Your offer will include an offer letter for your master’s program with the condition of successfully completing the Pre-Master’s pathway, Letter of Acceptance, and a Personal Attestation Letter (PAL).
Do I need to apply for two separate study permits for Pre-Master's and Master's program? How does it work?
When you apply for your study permit, you will use your Conditional Letter of Acceptance from Trent University along with a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), which outlines both your Pre-Master’s Certificate program (as a prerequisite) and your intended Master’s program. If your application is approved, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will issue a study permit that covers the duration of your Pre-Master’s program. After successfully completing the Pre-Master’s program, you will receive an Unconditional Letter of Acceptance for your Master’s program along with a new Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). These documents will allow you to apply to extend your study permit from within Canada for the full length of your intended Master’s program. When applying for the extension, you will need to provide updated proof of funds to IRCC to demonstrate that you can cover the tuition fees and living expenses for the remainder of your studies. You may continue studying at Trent with your original study permit as long as you continue to meet all study permit conditions and apply to extend before your original study permit expires.
Will I be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) with the Pre-Master's certificate?
Some of Trent’s Pre-Master’s Certificate programs may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) on their own. To determine eligibility, visit our website for the most up-to-date list of programs that currently qualify. For non-degree programs at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada, PGWP eligibility depends on whether the program is listed under the currently eligible Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes at the time of submitting either the study permit or PGWP application. These CIP codes are associated with occupations experiencing long-term labour shortages in Canada and may change based on evolving labour market needs. If your program’s CIP code is not on the list at the time of your PGWP application, it may still be eligible if it was listed when you submitted your study permit application. Additionally, for any program that is less than two years in duration, the PGWP may be issued for a period equal to the length of the program.
What is the length of PGWP I will be eligible for after completing both Pre-Master's and Master programs?
All our in-person Master’s programs are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. Your Trent Master's degree alone will allow you to apply for the maximum post-graduation work permit duration. As of February 15, 2024, graduates of Master’s programs at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada may be eligible for a 3-year PGWP, even if the program is less than 2 years in length, provided the program is at least 8 months long and the applicant meets all other PGWP eligibility criteria.
