Trent Experience

Start Your Dual Degree on the Right Note

Trent gives you the tools you need to be an expert chemist before you become an engineer

Get your lab coat and safety glasses ready, because chemistry at Trent is an interactive, immersive and intellectually-challenging experience. From the moment you arrive at Trent's Symons Campus in Peterborough – home to our leading science programs – you’ll be welcomed into a close-knit community that features a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to your studies.

One of the biggest advantages of this dual degree is the strong interdisciplinary foundation in chemistry you’ll receive at Trent – something that’s not always offered in other Chemical Engineering programs. With small class sizes, regular interaction with your professors, and an emphasis on hands-on laboratory work, Trent is the perfect place to start your journey to becoming a chemist and a chemical engineer.

Benefit From the Best: Faculty & Facilities

In the first two years of your dual degree, you’ll study in a program accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, gaining valuable hands-on experience with special equipment for modern experimental chemistry. Trent’s teaching and research chemistry facilities include everything a student needs to master their discipline — from state-of-the-art instrumentation to top-notch laboratory spaces and expert instructors.

You’ll also learn from some of the best and brightest in the scientific community. Trent’s trail-blazing faculty and staff in the Department of Chemistry are internationally-renowned experts well-known for their publications, patents and awards in teaching and research. As a high-achieving student at Trent, you’ll find opportunities to assist faculty in important research, or even be a contributing author in a published journal articles.

Take Advantage of Trent’s Leading-Edge Labs & Equipment

Because Trent’s Chemistry B.Sc. program includes ample lab time, you’ll spend the majority of your studies in the Chemical Sciences Building. Located on the east bank of the Otonabee River, the beautifully-designed Chemical Sciences Building is where you’ll have access to a wide variety of lab facilities and instrumentation. Get hands-on experience with equipment for modern experimental and theoretical chemistry, learn specialized lab techniques, and acquire the ability to understand and operate complex apparatus.

Take a peek at some of the laboratories and equipment at Trent’s Chemical Sciences Building.

Symons Campus: A Beautiful Place to Call Home

Just 90 minutes from downtown Toronto, Trent’s Symons Campus blends breathtaking landscapes with state-of-the-art research facilities and dynamic spaces. In this welcoming environment, you’ll be able to connect and interact with your fellow students and professors without feeling lost in a crowd. There’s even more to explore in downtown Peterborough, which features a vibrant variety of clubs, shops and trendy cafés and restaurants.

Get Involved: CHUGS

Trent’s Chemistry Undergraduate Society (CHUGS) is a great way to meet new people and get involved! Each year, CHUGS hosts multiple fun events for students, including movie nights, paintball trips and BBQs. The Society also offer helpful info sessions for first-year chemistry students and branded swag so that you can show off your love of CHUGS! Check out the CHUGS Facebook page and CHUGS Twitter feed for more information.

“In my first year of Chemistry at Trent, the lab experiments were my favourite thing. To be exposed to that environment and be allowed to play with chemicals was pretty exciting. It definitely had a big impact on me.”
