For more than a decade, the School of Education and Camp Kawartha have partnered to provide Trent Teacher Candidates with rich and meaningful outdoor learning opportunities. Through this certificate program, participants learn how to integrate outdoor activities and nearby green spaces into their teaching practice safely and purposefully, develop strategies for embedding environmental education across the curriculum in positive and hopeful ways, and incorporate the Indigenous roots of environmental education into their teaching.
The program also provides an opportunity for participants to share the experiences, knowledge, and expertise they have acquired prior to entering the teacher education program. Participants attend a series of half-day workshops held on Saturdays at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre, located adjacent to the Trent campus. To earn the certificate, participants must apply their learning during their school placements, demonstrating how outdoor and environmental education can enhance student learning and well-being.
