Admissions

Applicants must have achieved an average of at least an upper second-class standing (B+/77%) in the work of the last 10 full academic credits or the last two undergraduate years (full-time equivalent).

Students are also expected to have taken undergraduate courses relating to Canada, or be willing to take such courses as their make-up, usually before or sometimes after admission. As well, students must have a clear interest in an interdisciplinary graduate experience.

Application is made through the School of Graduate Studies. Please ensure that all components of the application are submitted as described on the Graduate Studies web page. The deadline for application for Fall intake is February 1st.

The following information must be submitted directly to the Graduate Studies Office by February 1st for September enrolment:

  • The completed Application for Admission to Graduate Studies form.
  • All university transcripts.
  • Two letters of  recommendation, from individuals familiar with the applicant's academic experience.
  • A list of current courses (if still completing a qualifying degree).
  • A Research Statement and Plan of Study (500-600 words) in which you state your intention in applying to undertake graduate study in the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies.  This statement should also include one of the following:
    • a description of your proposed research and an explanation of why your proposed thesis/MRP topic is worthy of study; how this interdisciplinary topic contributes to the ares of study of the Frost Centre; and a brief account of work that has been done on this, or related topics, by other scholars; OR
    • a synopsis of your discussion with Frost Centre faculty member(s) about how your thesis/MRP will be generated from their larger research projects and why this research is of interest to you

(Please note that because interests do change, this statement is not intended to serve as a binding commitment regarding thesis topic.)

  • A sample of your writing
  • An Academic Advisor who can offer advice and guidance will be assigned to incoming students.  Students will need to confirm their actual thesis supervisor during their first term of enrolment, and committee members by the end of their course-work in the first year. For a list of faculty members and their research interests, please visit the Faculty page.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all application items are received at Trent University by February 1st. Transcripts must be arranged to be sent directly to Trent by the issuing institutions.

The Admissions Committee will begin their process following the application deadline.  Applications received after this date will be adjudicated until all supported positions/spaces are filled.
