University of Malta

 

Study in Msida, Malta at the L-Università ta' Malta (University of Malta). 

The L-Università ta' Malta (UM) is the highest teaching institution in Malta and its leading public research university. Tracing its roots to the founding of the Collegium Melitense in 1592, it has a history spanning over 400 years and enrolls roughly 11,500 to 12,000 students, including a large international body.

Credit System

30 ECTS per semester is a full course load. This is usually 6-8 courses per semester – each worth anywhere from 2-10 ECTS.

  • Exchange students can choose units across most faculties, but certain professional areas (such as Medicine, Health Sciences, and Dental Surgery) are not available.
  • Exchange students can only take courses at the undergraduate level. 
  • At the University of Malta courses are referred to as study-units. Study-unit levels are designated by the first digit of the 4-digit code following the department letters (e.g., ABC1000), corresponding to undergraduate and postgraduate academic tiers.
    - Level 1 (e.g., 1000 series): Introductory or Year 1 undergraduate study-units.
    - Level 2 (e.g., 2000 series): Intermediate or Year 2/3 undergraduate study-units.
    - Level 3 (e.g., 3000 series): Advanced or final-year undergraduate study-units.
    - Level 5 and above (e.g., 5000 series): Postgraduate/Master’s level study-units.
