Student Profile

Name: Emma Olstad

Major: Business Administration - Specialization in HR

Exchange University: ESSCA School of Management – Summer Term

Advice:  “Since my original program got cancelled, I wish I would have taken more time to research the area of my new program in the week before I left. Some helpful things are figuring out where your accommodations are, what the bus / train schedules are, and what the weather and culture is.”

QUESTIONS

Why did you decide to travel abroad?

I love to travel, and I thought this would be an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in new cultures and meet new people.

Why did you choose to study at ESSCA?

I originally chose an alternate ESSCA program that didn’t end up running due to lack of participants and I got transferred to the Aix en Provence program. I learned about ESSCA from our study abroad advisor, Kate Logan. I would not change the program switch for anything as I still ended up visiting the places I was supposed to see in the first program.

What was your experience like?

I had the best experience with my teachers, other students and even the residents that live here. Both universities gave a welcoming environment and always had resources available. In France we had our student ambassador and event planner in group chats with us to have constant contact if need be.

What did you find was the most challenging while abroad?

There were a few things that my other classmates and I noticed about being abroad. These things include the exchange rate when buying things and the language barrier. I can speak French, but France French is very different from Ontario. Lastly, is the little things such as everyone in France likes to cross the road even when the light is red, cars don’t stop for you but in the Netherlands, it’s the exact opposite.

In your opinion, what would you say are the benefits of studying abroad?
  • Immersing yourself into a new culture
  • Meeting lifelong friends
  • Job opportunities
  • Different experiences
  • Getting to know yourself in a new light
What was one of your favourite memories from your time abroad?

My favourite memories include going to cultural events, wineries, trying new food with my classmates, and experiencing new teaching styles.

If someone told you they were thinking about studying abroad but weren’t convinced they should, what would you tell them?

I would tell them to reconsider. This was the best 6 weeks of my life and gave me amazing social and work experiences. I would also say that you will get opportunities you didn’t even dream of and living with strangers that become your friends is extremely helpful. If you ever feel lonely or homesick, everyone around you understands everything you’re going through. These friends will always be a part of your life.
