Dr. Kimberly Calderwood

Associate Professor, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario

Educational Background

  • BA (Waterloo)
  • MSW (Wilfrid Laurier)
  • PhD (Toronto)

General Background

Kim has been a practicing social worker for over 20 years in roles including but not limited to counselling, research, program development and management, community development, and advocacy. She has worked mostly in the addictions field, as well as mental health, bereavement and general private practice. She is a Certified Traumatic Incident Reduction Facilitator (TIRF) and Trainer (TIRT), and a Certified Life Stress Reduction Facilitator (LSRF) with Applied Metapsychology (AMP) – an empowering and anti-oppressive modality that focuses on resolving the impact of life stressors rather than simply assisting clients in finding ways to “cope” with the negative associations that occur as a result of stressors. Her research interests include bereavement processes, societal influences on bereavement, the factors that influence the effectiveness of the AMP modality, and social work education. Her teaching interests are varied but focus mostly on research methods, leadership, and innovative direct practice interventions.

Teaching and Research Interests

  • Direct practice methods that are critical, anti-oppressive, and self-empowering
  • The bereavement process and societal factors that influence this process
  • Recruitment and retention of social work students
  • Effective social work education
