Forensic Chemistry

Become an expert at analyzing and identifying unknown substances – key to any forensic investigation – in one of the only degree programs of its kind in Canada.

Trent’s Forensic Chemistry B.Sc. offers you the opportunity to apply knowledge and techniques in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry in a forensic context, such as evidence analysis. Conduct your own research using the latest technology in Trent’s state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories and explore advanced forensics techniques at the pioneering Forensic Crime Scene Facility.

Accelerate your career through the five year co-op stream with paid work terms

Trent's paid co-op is an opportunity for you to gain work-integrated experiential learning that will help you get a head start on your career. The Forensic Chemistry co-op assists graduating students in achieving a competitive edge while generating experience within a wide range of sectors and organizations.

Specifically, paid co-op gives you a chance to obtain 12 months of practical experience on the job, develop or enhance technical skills, explore career options, network with a variety of individuals and organizations, learn from mentors, enhance communication and presentation skills, and gain hands-on experience before you graduate.

Experiential Learning
  • Pursue the optional five-year co-op stream and graduate with 12 months of paid work experience, giving students a distinct career advantage and real-world practice while developing resume-boosting skills
  • Examinations of real evidence in Trent’s new Forensic Crime Scene Facility – the first building of its kind in Canada, 
  • A third-year work placement in a subdiscipline of your choice, including federal government internships with Border Services, RCMP, Health Canada or Food Inspection Services
  • Opportunities to conduct research and work directly with leading scientists in labs and professionals in the field, including community-based research projects and honours thesis research projects
  • Direct access to leading experts in forensics and law, as well as practitioners at the Natural Resources DNA Profiling and Forensics Centre and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, right here on campus

If you are coming straight from high school in Ontario or are a recent grad, the general admission requirements are:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • A minimum of six Grade 12 4U or 4M courses, including program specific prerequisites
  • A minimum 70% overall final average
  • ENG 4U with a minimum of 60%

Program specific requirements:

  • A minimum 75% overall average
  • SBI4U, SCH4U, and MHF4U or MCV4U are required
