Latin American Studies

Study alongside experts in Latin American Studies in this unique specialization to learn more about the historical, political, and culture significance of South America. You can participate in the Trent-in-Bolivia semester abroad, which features a hands-on community development project, which can be applied as credit towards your degree.

Courses

Graduating students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single- or joint-major Honours or General degree may apply for a Specialization in Latin American Studies if they have successfully completed the following 5.0 credits:

  • 1.0 GDST credit consisting of:
    • GDST 1001H: Human Inequality in Global Perspective
    • GDST 1002H: Issues in Global Human Inequality
  • 1.0 SPAN credit from:
    • SPAN 1000Y: Introduction to Spanish
    • SPAN 1001H: Introduction to Spanish I
    • SPAN 1002H: Introduction to Spanish II*
    • SPAN 2001H: Intermediate Spanish I
    • SPAN2002H: Intermediate Spanish II**
  • 1.5 GDST credits consisting of:
    • GDST 3760Y: Bolivian Seminar
    • GDST 3830H: Field Course in Andean Community Development
  • 1.0 SPAN credit consisting of:
    • SPAN 2501H: Advanced Intermediate Spanish I
    • SPAN 2502H: Advanced Intermediate Spanish II
  • 0.5 additional credit in:
    • GDST 3891H or 0.5 SPAN credit in addition to the above

* Students whose level of fluency in Spanish is judged to exceed the level of SPAN 1000Y are exempt from this requirement

** Students whose level of fluency in Spanish is judged to exceed the level of SPAN 2002H are exempt from this requirement
