Trent University Saddened by the Passing of Philanthropist Stephen Jarislowsky
Canadian investor remembered for his commitment to ethical leadership and strengthening democracy through postsecondary education
Trent University is saddened to learn of the passing of Stephen Jarislowsky, a prominent Canadian investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose commitment to strengthening democracy through education inspired significant support for Trent and universities across Canada.
A respected advocate for responsible corporate governance, Stephen founded Jarislowsky Fraser Limited and built it into one of Canada's leading investment management firms. He became a dedicated philanthropist who supported educational and cultural charitable initiatives across Canada, including at Trent University. In 2022, the Jarislowsky Foundation made a $2-million gift to Trent University to establish the Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership, part of a national network of five universities dedicated to educating future leaders in politics and public service. Stephen saw these chairs as a response to a pressing need in democratic societies, helping prepare future leaders to act with integrity and sound judgment.
His generosity to Trent extended beyond the establishment of the Jarislowsky Chair, with further contributions supporting the Leadership Lab at Trent University and work to advance education in ethical leadership, democratic values, and responsible governance.
“Stephen Jarislowsky understood the important role universities play in developing ethical leaders,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “We are grateful for his generosity and proud to see his vision carried forward through the work of Dr. Cristine de Clercy, Trent's inaugural Jarislowsky Chair, and the students she inspires.”
The University extends its sincere condolences to Stephen’s family and friends, and to all those whose lives were touched by his generosity and commitment to strengthening democracy.
