Ann Farquharson, a 2018 Spirit of Trent Award recipient, is remembered for her leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy that strengthened Trent University and Peterborough community

Graphic with text, Ann Farquharson '76 her legacy lives on at Trent University

The Trent University community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ann Farquharson ’76 (Traill College), a Trent University history graduate whose lifelong commitment to service and leadership helped strengthen both Trent and the Peterborough community.

Ann was a respected lawyer, volunteer, and advocate whose contributions spanned decades. She served as a human rights advisor at Trent University for several years, offering guidance and resolution in matters of equity and inclusion. At Trent, Ann mentored countless students, championed philanthropy within the University and local community, and established the Gordon Henry Taylor Farquharson Bursary in honour of her late father, ensuring future generations of students could pursue their dreams. She also served as President of the Peterborough Chapter of the Trent Alumni Association, further strengthening connections within the alumni community.

Her dedication extended beyond the University, as she gave her time and expertise to more than 25 organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough, Five Counties Children’s Centre, the Peterborough Rotary Club, and the Festival of Lights (now Peterborough Musicfest). Ann also served as a Peterborough City Councillor from 2007 to 2010 and sat on the Board of the Downtown Business Improvement Area, helping shape the city she loved.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Ann received the Spirit of Trent Award in 2018, in recognition of her commitment to the values of leadership, service, and community.

Ann’s legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her. The University extends heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the many lives touched by her generosity and vision.
