Phishing Season is Always Open: Stay Vigilant
Report scams and suspicious emails to I.T. using Outlook
Scam emails continue to be an evolving and persistent threat that universities across Canada face and we would like to remind you to be extra vigilant with messages in your inbox.
While scams and phishing can take many forms, please use the following tips to help identify phishing and scam messages:
- Never assume a message is legitimate based on the sender or who the message appears to be from – Email can easily appear to be from anyone including important members of the university community.
- The University will never distribute messages soliciting the sale or donation of any items.
- Always verify the legitimacy of any message that asks for personal information or talks about making payments, financial information or fines and fees.
- Consider the context of the message – Messages appearing without context, opportunities that emerge suddenly or messages from officials that seem out of place are all good indicators of a scam.
- Always verify the legitimacy of any message that asks you to click a link or open an attachment.
Think you’ve spotted a scam? Report It! In top toolbar for Outlook for PC, Mac or Web, click "Report" then "Report Phishing" which allows Trent's automated security tools to spring into action.
