Construction Work Begins to Restore Bata Catwalk

February 24, 2025

The raised walkway connecting Champlain College and Bata Library is undergoing essential rehabilitation work to protect the structural integrity of the heritage feature

Trent University is investing in the essential restoration of the Bata catwalk, the raised walkway above the stairs between the Bata bus loop and podium, completing rehabilitation work to protect its structural integrity.

Repairs and upgrades to the catwalk include a deck replacement to support regular use, which will extend the lifespan of this pathway from the podium to Bata Library and meet modern accessibility requirements.

Moving Safely around the Work Site
The campus community and visitors are advised to move with caution around the work site by the bus loop and the upper catwalk level.  Access to Bata Library from the Champlain podium via the catwalk will not be available during the restoration work. Below the catwalk, between the first floor of Bata Library and Champlain College, crews will be maintaining a pathway around the fenced-off work site, including accessible ramps and a small section of stairs up to the Bata podium.

Alternative Accessibility Pathways
Members of the Trent community and campus visitors with accessibility requirements can still access Bata Library through first-floor entrances and take the elevators near Trent Archives to upper floors.

An accessible pathway between Bata Library or the Bata bus loop and the Champlain podium is available via the elevator in Champlain College located near The Ceilie.

Timeline for Completion
The project is expected to take six months to complete, aligning with the best possible weather conditions to conduct the work. It must take place during the spring to be complete ahead of the 2025-26 academic year, and most of this work will take place during the summer academic term when there is less traffic on campus.

Planning for Convocation
All 2025 Convocation ceremonies in Peterborough will be held in person on campus in the Trent Athletics Centre. Planning is underway to ensure this year’s ceremonies are celebratory, enjoyable, and create lasting memories for graduates and guests. Visit trentu.ca/convocation for updates, information, and FAQs about arrangements for 2025 Convocation ceremonies.
