On the Hoof of Discovery — University Researchers' Alpine Mammal Study Published in Nature Magazine | Nature.com

Trent University researchers Dr. Daria Martchenko and Dr. Aaron Shafer have had their study on alpine mammal population dynamics and adaptive signals published in the renowned scientific journal Heredity, the official journal of the Genetics Society. The study compared two sequencing approaches, whole-genome resequencing (WGS) and reduced representation sequencing (RADseq), to analyze the North American mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) population. Their research shed light on the glacial-induced vicariance and the species' low effective population size. The study also explored local adaptation and environmental influences on genetic diversity.

Trent University Students Shine on Global Sports Stage | Rowing Canada | The Globe & Mail

Two Trent University students are set to make their mark on the international sports stage as they head off to major international competitions. Kal Sager (Peter Gzowski College), a dedicated rugby player, and Grace VandenBroek (Peter Gzowski College), an accomplished rower, are gearing up to showcase their talents.

Kal will compete with the Canada's Men's Sevens Team for Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens, at the rugby sevens Paris 2024 Qualification Event taking place August 19-20 in Langford, BC. Grace will compete with the Canadian Rowing Team on women’s quadruple scull for the 2023 World Rowing Championships from September 3-10 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Both athletes carry the Trent University banner with pride and inspire fellow student-athletes with their achievements in sports at the highest level.

Trent Durham GTA Cafe Earns 3 Star Certified Green Restaurant® Status

The Trent Durham GTA Cafe achieved a significant milestone by becoming a 3 Star Certified Green Restaurant®.

“This certification recognizes the work of the Durham GTA team to meet the high sustainability aspirations of the campus community,” shared Mark Murdoch, executive director of Conferences, Hospitality and Food Services. “This is our third dining room to be awarded the certification, helping Food Services elevate its sustainability program across all of our properties.”

This certification underscores the campus’ commitment to continuing to explore sustainable practices in all areas — reducing environmental impact, promoting energy efficiency, and sourcing eco-friendly ingredients, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious dining experience for the campus community.

“As the Trent Durham campus continues to grow, we want to align with best practices that allow that growth to be as green as possible,” said Dr. Scott Henderson, dean and head of Trent Durham GTA. “Our students, staff, and faculty all recognize the importance of responding to climate change. To have our campus cafe be named as a 3 Star Certified Green Restaurant® is a tremendous recognition of the efforts being made by everyone on campus.”
