Joe Muldoon, head coach of the Trent Excalibur women’s curling team, has been named the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women’s Curling Coach of the Year for the 2022/23 season.

“Joe has made significant contributions to the Trent Excalibur varsity program in his more than 20 years as a varsity coach,” said Leslie Spooner, interim director, Athletics & Recreation. “His passion for the sport of curling and his commitment to our student athletes is outstanding. Being named the OUA Women’s Curling Coach of the Year is so well deserved and we are honoured that Joe is a part of the Excalibur team.”

Muldoon, well-known for building reputation and programs as head of Trent’s Durham GTA campus, has coached the Excalibur men’s curling team for the last seven years, leading the men to a top ten finish at the 2022 OUA Championships. He took over as head coach of the women’s team this season with hopes to develop the program and compete competitively at OUA Championships.

He did just that this season, coaching the team to the OUA Championships this past weekend in Oshawa.

The women went undefeated in round robin play and entered playoffs as the number one overall seed, with the best last shot draw score. The team ultimately fell in a closely contested quarterfinal game against Laurentian University.

“I feel so humbled to have coached an incredible group of women curlers this season,” said Muldoon. “I’m so proud of all those ladies who went undefeated in round robin play. This award shows what happens when a group comes together and plays as one.”

He notes that his assistant coach Dillon Muldoon was an integral part of receiving this award.
