On CBC Radio: How Wolves Came to Shape Canada
Trent professor Dr. Stephanie Rutherford speaks with CBC’s The Sunday Magazine about the relationship between wolves and nationhood in Canada
In her latest book Villain, Vermin, Icon, Kin: Wolves and the Making of Canada, Dr. Stephanie Rutherford, associate professor in Trent’s School of the Environment, examines how the different interpretations of wolves throughout history relates to nationhood in Canada and the impact of colonialism on nature.
In their interview with CBC’s Helen Mann on The Sunday Magazine, Professor Rutherford says wolves represent Canada’s relationship with nature.
“Wolves almost became this sort of symbol for the lack of foresight,” said Prof. Rutherford. “This relationship with wolves demonstrates the way things can go seriously wrong if we don’t listen to non-human life on their own terms.”
