Professor Kinzl was a Trent University Employee for over 30 years

The Trent community is saddened to learn of the passing of long-time professor and department chair Dr. Konrad Kinzl.

Dr. Kinzl began his career at Trent University in 1971 with his appointment as a member of faculty. He was appointed as associate professor 1971 and full professor in Ancient History in 1981, a position he held until his retirement in 2006. Following his retirement Dr. Kinzl was recognized for his longstanding tenure at Trent with the title of professor emeritus. During his career at the University Dr. Kinzl also served as the chair of the department of Classical Studies from 1982 to 1990.

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Kinzl’s obituary notice:

Konrad Heinrich Kinzl, age 81, of Peterborough, Ontario passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022. Predeceased by his late wife Helga Waltraud Kinzl (nee Zaunschirm) and his parents Hans and Paula Kinzl. Konrad is survived by Helga’s daughter, Rafaela Sarel-Prommer and Rafaela’s children, Dan Sarel and Natalie Sarel (and her children Olivia & Filippo Moroni).

Konrad was born July 18, 1940 in Vienna, Austria. He studied Ancient History, Classical Philology and Archeology at the University of Vienna where he received his doctorate. In 1968 he left Austria and came to Canada. July 1, 1971 he became an assistant professor at Trent University in Peterborough, ON. He continued on to be a Full Professor of Ancient History in 1981, then becoming emeritus on June 30, 2006. He was a lifetime member of the Society for Classical Studies (formerly the American Philological Association), the Mommsen Society and the Classical Association. He was an editor and author of multiple articles and books on archaic and classical Greek history.

The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Kinzl’s family and friends, and to all who knew him at Trent.
