Science is constantly evolving and new methods are emerging very quickly. One of the newest topics in the field of forensic science is forensic genealogy, which surrounds the use of genetic information found in databases such as GEDMatch, where individuals submit their genetic samples in order to find distant family members, for forensic purposes. There are many benefits to forensic genealogy, however, it has also sparked a lot of controversy. Dr. Christine Freeman-Roth and Dr. Byron Stoyles of the Philosophy department will discuss some ethical and legal aspects of the topic. Dr. Mike Illes, Professor David McNab, Dr. Barry Saville, and Dr. Aaron Shafer will discuss their views on forensic genealogy from their forensic science standpoints.

This event will be held virtually, via Zoom. Those interested are asked to register in advance.

Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom link on the morning of January 29th, 2021.
