Leading-edge Financial Analytics B.Sc. combines math, statistics, economics, business and computing to prepare graduates to excel in finance careers

A one-of-a-kind Financial Analytics B.Sc. degree, launching fall 2020 at Trent University, is set to equip graduates with the skills and experience to build a successful career in today’s dynamic and opportunity-filled financial world.

Through its interdisciplinary approach, the new Bachelor of Science in Financial Analytics combines all aspects of finance – from mathematics and statistics to economics, business and computing – an advantage that no other program offers. Students in the program will establish a strong understanding of financial theory and application, and progress towards specialties within finance, including applied mathematics, statistics, optimization, business, economics, and computing.

“In Ontario, there are only a limited handful of undergraduate programs in what we call “finance”. There isn’t a program this interdisciplinary, this cross-pollinating, that also prepares graduates not only to do finance, but to do more,” said Dr. Wesley Burr, assistant professor of statistics at Trent University. “Exposure to material from markedly different perspectives will strengthen and accentuate graduates’ skills, making them uniquely qualified to succeed in today’s dynamic, fast-paced finance industry.”

Students in the Financial Analytics B.Sc. will learn from experts across the University – working alongside leaders from the prestigious School of Business and the Departments of Mathematics and Economics. From computer labs and case analyses, to research projects and virtual trading, students will also have the opportunity to extend their knowledge beyond the classroom and into hands-on, career-boosting experiences.

"The Financial Analytics degree is designed to produce graduates who are strongly computational, analytical, and interdisciplinary,” added Professor Burr. “The training that the graduates of this program receive will prepare them for a wealth of careers across the public sector, the nonprofit sector, finance itself, and the sub-areas of insurance and banking.”

Applications for the Financial Analytics B.Sc. (Honours) are now being accepted for September 2020.
