Dr. Chakravartty was a dedicated Mathematics faculty member for 33 years

The Trent University community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Iswar Chakravartty, who worked with the University for over 30 years.

Professor Chakravartty started his career at Trent in 1967 as an assistant professor in Mathematics. In 1972, he was appointed associate professor. From 1974 to 1976, Prof. Chakravartty served as the senior don of Champlain College then chairman of the Mathematics department from 1977 to 1980. He was appointed a full professor of Mathematics in 1980 and celebrated his 30 years of service at Trent University in 1997 before retiring in 2000.

Prof. Chakravartty was awarded the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching (1980-81) and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association Teaching Award (1991). On receiving the former, Prof. Chakravartty said “One of the better satisfactions is to be appreciated by your own students.”

Prof. Chakravartty is remembered fondly by his peers as an excellent professor and a helpful, pleasant and interesting colleague. He was a donor of Trent University’s “For Tomorrow” campaign, contributing to a variety of faculty research projects and international student scholarships.

The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Iswar Chakravartty’s family and friends, and to all who knew him at Trent University.
