Trent/Fleming School of Nursing brings new exposure to ancient field of medicine

In-depth learning about an ancient field of medicine in Trent’s newly-expanded, state-of-the-art clinical learning centre –  perhaps two things that you wouldn’t naturally pair together, but a new nursing course in Traditional Chinese Medicine is set to equip the next generation of nurses, and students at Trent in different programs, with a more holistic look at healthcare.

An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a new offering from the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing which has plenty to teach anyone curious about the philosophy of TCM, its principles and use with Western health care.

“For all students, this course will help broaden their perspective on health beyond the traditional Western medical perspective,” says Dr. Kirsten Woodend, dean of the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing.

The course serves as a popular elective for Nursing students eager to incorporate the history, regulation, and practice of traditional Chinese medicine into their studies. Following extensive research of TCM educational and medical programs in China, the course was developed in collaboration with Tony Tavares, the course instructor and a local TCM practitioner.

“Trent's commitment to holistic Nursing is strengthened by this course,” states Mr. Tavares. “It positions the program as a trailblazer by offering educational options that will prepare students for a healthcare work environment that continues to offer more integrated allopathic and complementary therapies.”

The new course will see students learn about the history, regulation, and practice of TCM. This includes the philosophy of TCM, the principles and methods used in diagnosing illness, developing treatment plans, promoting health, and how TCM and Western health care approaches can be used together.
