Trent University unveils expansion plans to Oshawa City Council at the June 11 Council meeting

Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area has unveiled expansion plans for its Oshawa campus that includes a proposed new building recently approved by the Trent University Board of Governors.

The planned building will combine academic and residential space, lecture halls, classrooms and faculty offices in a full living/learning community. The integration of academic, administrative and student living space will foster a scholarly community experience.

“The expansion of the Trent University Durham GTA campus will provide even more students with access to a postsecondary education and to a growing range of degree programs right here in Oshawa,” said Oshawa Mayor John Henry. “We’re excited to see the expansion plans continue to unfold and we look forward to updates and the ground-breaking.”

“Trent’s long and fruitful relationship with the City of Oshawa has been key to our success at the Durham campus,” said Joe Muldoon, head of Trent University Durham GTA. “As we announce plans for a major expansion of our presence in Oshawa, introduce new undergraduate and graduate programs and increase careers and experiential learning opportunities, our partnership with the City will grow for the benefit of everyone in the Oshawa community and the region of Durham.”

The University’s Durham campus has a rich 43-year history in Durham Region and in the City of Oshawa. Today, the campus provides a transformative learning experience for over 1,200 students from countries as far away as China and India and as close to home as Oshawa and the GTA.

In June 2017, the City announced a donation of 1.8 acres of land to Trent University Durham GTA, enabling the University to proceed with plans to expand the Durham campus and programs offered on Thornton Road South in Oshawa.

The parcel of land is located at the north-end of 99 Thornton Road South (Civic Recreation Complex), adjacent to the Trent University Durham GTA campus at 55 Thornton Road South.

The transfer of land will take place once the University’s expansion receives site plan approval from the City and the City is in the position to issue a building permit for the first building.
