Environmental science communication students in the Trent School of the Environment had the opportunity to organize and participate in their own conference on Thursday, November 30, enriching their student experience at Trent and offering a unique chance to develop skills and experience in conference organizing and communicating across channels.

Third and fourth-year science students from Environment & Communication ERSC 3501 practiced their oral and visual communication skills in presentations, videos, conversation, and conference organizing in the Gathering Space, where they were able to develop first hand their acumen as science communicators in their chosen field of Sustainability for Everyday Life.

Trent alumna Tegan Moss ‘08, executive director at Peterborough’s community bike shop B!KE, attended and spoke with students about everyday sustainability and winter cycling. Topics presented ranged from blockchain technology and alternative protein sources, to kitchen gardens and waste management.

“I’m really impressed by the breadth of topics and broad range of projects,” said Shelley Strain, sustainability coordinator at Trent University, who attended the conference and spoke with the students.  Shelley requested two of the students’ presentations to profile at the Office of Sustainability – one on recycle sorting and another on cell-phone recycling at Trent.
