Dr. Torben Drewes shares insights into picking the right career path

Career Week Stories: Advice from an Economics Professor

According to Dr. Torben Drewes, an economics professor at Trent University, picking a career should be linked to a student’s interests and skills, but may not necessarily take them on a straight path.

Although Professor Drewes says he would describe his own career path as linear, he realizes that is not necessarily a common experience in today’s world. And he argues that perhaps it shouldn’t be. Because many university programs majors may not necessarily lead directly and cleanly into one career path, students think this means they will not be able to find jobs. Prof. Drewes wants students to know this is a myth – the skills you gain through an undergraduate university education are exactly what will best prepare you for any chosen career.

In a world where critical thinking and communication are more important than ever, students learn how to think and how to challenge the way we think at Trent.

What is Drewes’ greatest advice to students trying to plan out their career? “Enjoy what you’re doing now. It is really important to discover your interests, talents, passions and skills not only before deciding on a major, but also when picking a career path.”

In celebration of Canada Career Week (November 4-7) we are sharing a new story every day from our students, our alumni and our University’s leaders on how Trent best prepares our students and graduates for success in their chosen careers.
