Professor Murphy worked at Trent University from 1966-1999

The Trent University community was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Noel Murphy on June 1, 2017. He started working at Trent in 1966 as an assistant professor in the department of Mathematics. During his time at Trent University, Professor Murphy was the chair of the Mathematics department from 1992 through to 1996. He retired from Trent on July 1, 1999.

Below is an excerpt from his obituary notice:

Noel Murphy died suddenly in Toronto on June 1, 2017. Born in Dublin in 1934, Noel left his home and his family at the age of 14 to pursue his studies in Liverpool. He went on to graduate from Liverpool
University with first-class honours in Mathematics in 1956. After periods at the University of Liverpool and Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland, Noel was professor of Mathematics at Trent
University from 1965 to 1999. While at Trent University, he served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and as President of the Trent University Faculty Association.  He will be greatly missed by his wife, his three children, Una Murphy, Kirsten Murphy and Jean-Noël Murphy, his three stepchildren, Clara Gonzalez-Martin, Christian Gonzalez-Martin and Fernando Gonzalez-Martin, and by his eleven grandchildren.

The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Prof. Murphy’s family and friends, and to all who knew him in Peterborough and at Trent University.
