Dr. Fengchang Wu awarded National Science and Technology Second-class Award and Resources and Environmental Protection Technology Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress

Former Trent Researcher Wins Top Awards in China

A former Trent University postdoctoral fellow is making his name known in his home country of China, recently being awarded two of the country’s top prizes – the National Science and Technology Second-class Award from the Chinese Government and the Resources and Environmental Protection Technology Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (HLHL) in Hong Kong.

As part of the developing relationship between Trent University and Nanjing University, Professors Peter Dillon, Douglas Evans, Stephen Hill, Naomi Stock and Asaf Zohar visited China in late October. While in China they also met in Beijing with Dr. Wu who worked with Drs. Evans and Dillon as a postdoctoral fellow from 2000 to 2004.

Currently, Dr. Wu is the director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Criteria and Risk Assessment of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Ministry of Environmental Protection in Beijing.

Earlier this year Dr. Wu received the National Science and Technology Second-class Award from the Chinese Government (awarded for work in 2013). This award is the top award in China in the Environmental Protection field. His award ceremony was held with President Jinping Xi and Prime Minister Keqiang Li in the Great Hall of the People in January.

More recently, last month he was announced as the winner of the Resources and Environmental Protection Technology Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (HLHL), Hong Kong. The foundation was established in 1994 with funds donated by the S H Ho Foundation Ltd., K J Leung Foundation Ltd., Ho Tim Foundation Ltd. and Dr Lee Guo-Wei’s Wei Lun Foundation Ltd. Primarily, the Foundation awards annual prizes to distinguished Chinese scholars from mainland China in recognition of achievements in science, technology, medicine and other disciplines. The HLHL award is the most influential non-governmental prize in science and technology in China.

Trent University extends its congratulations to Dr. Wu for his extraordinary achievements.
