Dr. Yves Bergeron discusses ecosystem management of the Canadian Boreal forest

“We are responsible for our forests, as you see, they’re sitting in our own backyard,” explained Dr. Yves Bergeron, FRSC, Professor at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue and at Université du Québec à Montréal, who recently visited Trent University as part of the Royal Society of Canada Romanowski lecture series.

Professor Bergeron’s lecture, Towards Ecosystem Management of the Canadian Boreal Forest, stressed the need for new strategies in forest management to sustain the boreal forest. He also shared the current research collaborations underway to maintain old forest growth without the harm of manmade disturbances and cutovers, such as fire.

Along with a public lecture, Prof. Bergeron spoke to a fourth year Biology class and with Environmental & Life Sciences graduate students. Reflecting on his time at Trent, Prof. Bergeron noted, “I had a warm welcome from both faculty and graduate students and I certainty see a lot of potential for career success in many of the students I met.”

The Romanowski Lecture Series informs Canadians of recent advances in research and technology in the environmental sciences based on the lecturer’s particular knowledge and expertise.
