Stewart Wheeler ’88 welcomed to campus for North at Trent lecture series

Political program manager for the Canadian embassy in Afghanistan, press secretary to the Honourable Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, and now Canada’s ambassador to Iceland, Trent alumnus Stewart Wheeler ’88 has held many rich and fascinating career experiences since his days as a student at Trent University.

Mr. Wheeler returned to campus in January as the first speaker in the 2016 North at Trent lecture series, an annual series sponsored by the Roberta Bondar Fellowship Fund and the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies.

“It’s really great to be back. I toured the campus and so much has changed in 25 years,” said Mr. Wheeler during his time at Trent. “Lots of new and exciting things happening at Trent, but it still has the same core feel to it.”

Speaking of his time at Trent and how it helped prepare him for a successful career, Mr. Wheeler said: “When I was deciding on where and what to study, I thought I wanted to study Biology, become a doctor, and follow in my father’s footsteps, but coming to Trent, pursuing International Studies, and then doing a third year study abroad in Spain, really cemented by decision to change my path,” explains Mr. Wheeler.

Learn more about Mr. Wheeler’s time back on campus, the connection and similarities between Canada and Iceland, and his role as a Canadian Ambassador to Iceland in this podcast: https://mycommunity.trentu.ca/alumni/from-the-house
