Facilities Renewal Update
Preliminary planning for Trent University’s $42.4 million facilities renewal project is well underway.
The first component of this multi-phase development strategy involves preparing for the upgrades to Athletics Complex and Traill College.
Athletics Complex
Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners have been selected through a competitive bidding process as the architects for the Athletics Complex. The Athletics Complex will be completely renovated and the new Commons extension will be built onto it. Initial consultations have taken place with all user groups of the new space, including the Athletics and Recreation Department, Student Affairs, Health Services, Counselling Services, Careers, Housing, and Academic Skills Centre. Elements under consideration in the new space are a food concession, a fitness cardio centre, and a rowing tank. Preliminary schematics have been produced, however these plans are still contingent on the final budget. The goal is to complete the construction renovations to the Athletics Complex by late 2009.
Traill College
Renovations to Crawford House are now completed and several faculty members from the History department have already relocated to their new offices there. In conjunction with consulting architect Erik Wilke of Peterborough, preliminary designs have already been produced for the re-purposing other buildings on Traill campus into a graduate student space. The second and third floor of Wallis Hall will be converted into graduate student offices and 14 self-contained apartments. The lower level of Scott House will be renovated in order to double the size of the existing computer lab. Plans are also being developed to renovate the Traill College Lecture Hall.
Work will begin in April once spring exams have ended and will continue throughout the summer. The goal is to complete all the renovations to Traill College by September 1, 2008.
The construction of Module C, a new building adjacent to the DNA Building, is in the planning phase with a goal to have the architect appointed in 2008. The rest of the facilities strategy, such as renovations to Champlain College offices and the Bata Library expansion, will fall into place once the Athletics Complex is complete.
