Trent Takes Environmental Expertise to Parliament Hill
Professor Chris Metcalfe, director of the Institute for Watershed Science at Trent University, was the guest speaker on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 5 for the prestigious “Bacon and Eggheads” series organized by the Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
Prof. Metcalfe spoke to an early morning gathering of national MPs and federal officials about the environmental risks of expelled prescription drugs in his presentation entitled “What are we flushing down the drain? Assessing the hazards of pharmaceuticals and personal care products”. His current research on the fate and distribution of these chemicals in the environment has generated considerable attention nationally and internationally. Dr. Metcalfe is also involved in the in vitro and in vivo studies on the toxicological effect of contaminants.
The purpose of these breakfast meetings is to inform parliamentarians about recent advances in science and engineering. This flagship series brings together government leaders with experts across science and engineering, showcasing outstanding Canadian research accomplishments. Its purpose is to provide unbiased insight into topical scientific issues, within a non-partisan forum in which lobbying is not permitted. This influential forum represents a unique opportunity for scientists to communicate important findings to a distinguished and influential audience, which includes key decision-makers.
In 2006, Trent University bestowed Prof. Metcalfe with the Distinguished Researcher of the Year award in recognition of his extensive and internationally renowned work determining the environmental fate and toxic effects of organic contaminants in the aquatic environment.
